1.) What is the importance of a 6th Circuit Judge to residents of Champaign County?

Though most people don't plan or intend to be involved in the local courts -- divorce, orders of protection, traffic cases, and criminal allegations, as well as jury duty could bring anyone -- citizen or non-citizen, into Court and before a Circuit judge.

Society needs a judicial system that protects individual's Constitutional and statutory rights, while making sure that the interest of the public are also protected. A Circuit Judge plays an important role in this area.

A Circuit Judge makes rulings in non-evidentiary issues, and evidentiary rulings in temporary and final hearings and trials that greatly impact the outcome of a case and an individual’s and family’s future. These include evidentiary rulings as well as issues about whether a defendant must be incarcerated before trial (pre-trial detention) and if so, what the conditions of bond are (including a cash bond). In a criminal case, a Circuit Judge also decides the sentence for a defendant found guilty. A defendant's sentence may range from a community-based sentence like court supervision, conditional discharge or probation to prison time. How much time and whether a defendant spends it prison or in with his family doing public service work in the community is often at the discretion of the Circuit Judge.

The decisions rendered in each case, and the time it takes to render a decision by a judge, has a huge impact on the individual and families needing their case addressed.

2.) Why are you qualified to be a 6th Circuit Judge?

I have lived in the Champaign-Urbana community for more than 25 years, and volunteered in the schools, for not-for profit organizations like the University YWCA, and the Champaign County Health Care Consumers. I currently serve on the steering committee of the Champaign County chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Champaign-Urbana Tenant Union, and am president of the Urbana Free Library Board Foundation.

I am fluent in Spanish and have worked with the immigrant population for years. I helped start a free legal clinic for immigrants that I continue to volunteer with on a regular basis and annually donate more than 1000 hours of free legal work to low income individuals and organizations.

I have been practicing law here in Champaign County for more than 15 years and practice in all areas that a Circuit Judge presides over. Additionally, I have appealed cases from the Circuit Court to the Appellate Courts and have gotten some Circuit Court judge’s rulings overturned.

I do more pro bono free legal work than any other attorney in Champaign County and have the broadest experience in the practice of law and in volunteer work in the community of all of the candidates for Circuit Judge. My volunteer work in the community as well as my legal experience makes me uniquely qualified to be a 6th Circuit Judge.

3.) What areas of Law have you had substantial experience in?

All. As a general practice attorney, I regularly represent clients in felony and misdemeanor criminal cases, traffic, family law, orders of protection, juvenile abuse and neglect, juvenile abuse and neglect, and predicate orders. I also have substantial experience in real estate transactions, DCFS administrative cases, and appeals from the Circuit Court.

4.) Is there anything else you would like to say to an undecided voter?

I am happy to share information about my experience in the community and in the courtroom. If you have any questions you can contact me through my website: www.wyman4circuitjudge.org. Please add your name to our email list through my website or "friend" me through my campaign Facebook page, to learn about upcoming events for the campaign.

I have regular 'meet and greet' events that I would love for you to attend so that we may speak about any questions or concerns you may have about the Circuit Court or the race. Additionally, if you would like me to speak at a group meeting or event you will be having, please contact me, and I would be happy to coordinate the meeting.

Thank you for you interest in my campaign!
