6th Circuit - Clem Vacancy |
|
What is the importance a 6th Circuit Judge to your constituents in Champaign County? |
Judges do not have "constituents" like legislators do - we are not beholden to particular individuals. Our job is to uphold the Constitution. Judges do not make laws; we only interpret them. Because my rulings effect citizens in our community, I adhere to strong local values. |
Why are you qualified to be a 6th Circuit Judge? |
I practiced law for 25 years before being appointed as a judge in October 2016. For the last 18 years, I served as Chief Champaign County Public Defender. I ran the office with 17 employees and a million dollar budget. I handled well over 100 jury trials. I was president or chair of numerous local and statewide legal organizations. I was appointed by the Governor to a statewide criminal justice board. I was a hearing's board officer for the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission. I taught trial advocacy at the Univ. of Illinois College of Law. |
What is a key policy difference between you and your Primary Opponent? |
Judges are ethically precluded from discussing policy issues because they may come before the Court. |
Is there anything else you would like to say to an undecided voter in Champaign County? |
Experience counts. I am the only person running for this judicial spot who has judicial experience. Both my primary and general election opponents applied for the position but the Supreme Court selected me because I was the most qualified candidate. As a judge, I have the responsibility to do what it takes to enhance the public's trust in the judiciary. I treat litigants with respect and dignity. I make fair rulings and explain them well. I have been a committed public servant for decades and bring to the bench many qualifications: jury trial experience, leadership skills and an even temperament. I ask for your vote. |
