6th Circuit - Clem Vacancy

Questions & Answers

What is the importance a 6th Circuit Judge to your constituents in Champaign County?

Judges do not have "constituents" like legislators do - we are not beholden to particular individuals. Our job is to uphold the Constitution. Judges do not make laws; we only interpret them. Because my rulings effect citizens in our community, I adhere to strong local values.

Why are you qualified to be a 6th Circuit Judge?

I practiced law for 25 years before being appointed as a judge in October 2016. For the last 18 years, I served as Chief Champaign County Public Defender. I ran the office with 17 employees and a million dollar budget. I handled well over 100 jury trials. I was president or chair of numerous local and statewide legal organizations. I was appointed by the Governor to a statewide criminal justice board. I was a hearing's board officer for the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission. I taught trial advocacy at the Univ. of Illinois College of Law.

What is a key policy difference between you and your Primary Opponent?

Judges are ethically precluded from discussing policy issues because they may come before the Court.

Is there anything else you would like to say to an undecided voter in Champaign County?

Experience counts. I am the only person running for this judicial spot who has judicial experience. Both my primary and general election opponents applied for the position but the Supreme Court selected me because I was the most qualified candidate. As a judge, I have the responsibility to do what it takes to enhance the public's trust in the judiciary. I treat litigants with respect and dignity. I make fair rulings and explain them well. I have been a committed public servant for decades and bring to the bench many qualifications: jury trial experience, leadership skills and an even temperament. I ask for your vote.
